James W. Keith [Keath] M. D.

The subject of this sketch is a son of Michael and Catherine Keith {Keath} and was born in Schafferstown in 1855. He obtained a thorough common school education in the local public schools and in Mrs. Miller's select school, and taught school a number of terms. He began the study of medicine with Dr. I. Reily Bucher, who was practicing his profession in Schaefferstown and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1876.  He immediately entered upon the active practice of medicine in his native town as assistant to his preceptor until the following spring when he bought out the latter, whom removed to Lebanon.  With the exception of an interval of a year and a half [1898 and 1899] during which period he resided in Philadelphia and there practiced his profession, he has from that time been continuously engaged in healing the sick of his native town and vicinity. His practice became so extensive that he was obliged to associate with him as copartners, successively, Drs. John Beatty and John J. Light.  The latter is his copartner now [1900]. Dr. Keith [Keath] married Miss Ida H. Rex, a descendent of Alexander Schaeffer, and their union has been blessed with four children, three surviving; Georgietta, James, and Anna.
