Capture of flag of 27th Virginia Infantry (C.S.A.). from Nancy Holmes Simpson [8/7/2005] and Robert O. Wilson

"Some records show Billy unassaigned, but pay records show him paid with E CO until 21 July 1864 when he was assigned to A CO. During the winter of 1863-64, Billy's company served picket and outpost duty near Culpepper Courthouse, VA. In the spring of 1864 the 3rd IN CAV participated in Sheridan's Raid on Richmond, Long Bridge, Hanover Courthouse, and Meadow Bridge. As the regiments 3 year enlistment ended, new recruits and veterans who reenlisted were formed in to A and B COs and sent to the Shenandoah Valley. They served at Petersburg in the fall and in the spring the remaining 2 companies were assigned to Gen. George A. Custer as his personal bodyguard. The 3rd fought at Opequon Creek, Cedar Creek, James River Canal Raid, Fivew Forks, Sailors Creek, and Appomattox Courthouse. As the war was drawing to a close, Custer offered a month's furlough to any man who could capture the colors of an enemy regiment. On 6 Apr 1865 at Sailors Creek, Billy captured the colors of the 27th VA INF (CSA). Not only did he receive his month's furlough, but on 3 May 1865 he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor."

Fallen Soldiers from Washington Co. OH Taken from The History of Washington Co., Ohio 1778-1881 by H. Z. Williams (Partial List - 624 Names) Keith, Peter B. 77th, Co. K date of death: Nov. 1862, place of death: Wash., D. C. cause of death/notes: In hospital of hardships while a prisoner. Captured at Fallen Timber, parolled. Union soldiers interred in the Military Asylum Cemetery, D. C., opened on or about August 1, 1861, and closed May 12, 1864. Keith, P. B. Corporal 77th [OH] K date died: 29 Oct. 1862 Fallen Timbers, April 8 [1862, part of the Battle of Shiloh/Pittsburg Landing] On April 8, Grant sent Sherman south along the Corinth Road on a reconnaissance in force to ascertain if the Confederates had retreated or if they were regrouping to resume their attacks. Grant's army lacked the large organized cavalry units that would have been better suited for reconnaissance and for vigorous pursuit of a retreating enemy. Sherman marched with two infantry brigades from his division, along with two battalions of cavalry, and they met up with Brig. Gen. Thomas J. Wood's division of Buell's army. Six miles southwest of Pittsburg Landing, Sherman's men came upon a clear field in which an extensive camp was erected, including a Confederate field hospital, protected by 300 troopers of Southern cavalry, commanded by Col. Nathan Bedford Forrest. The road approaching the field was covered by fallen trees for over 200 yards. As skirmishers from the 77th Ohio Infantry approached, having difficulty clearing the fallen timber, Forrest ordered a charge, producing a wild melee with Southern troopers firing shotguns and revolvers and brandishing sabers, nearly resulting in the capture of Sherman himself. As Col. Jesse Hildebrand's brigade began forming in line of battle, the Southern troopers started to retreat at the sight of the strong force, and Forrest, who was well in advance of his men, came within a few yards of the federal soldiers before realizing he was all alone. Hundred of Sherman's men yelled out, "Kill him! Kill him and his horse!" A Union soldier shoved his musket into Forrest's side and fired, striking him above the hip, penetrating to the spine. Although he was seriously wounded, Forrest grabbed a Union soldier up by his collar onto the back of his horse and used him as a shield to protect his escape. The Union lost about 100 men, mostly captured during Forrest's charge, in an incident that has been remembered with

the name "Fallen Timbers". After capturing the Confederate field hospital, Sherman encountered the rear of Breckinridge's covering force and, determining that the enemy was making no signs of renewing his attack, withdrew back to camp.
