William Carlyle Linney (1841-Cir 1916)

From the biography of his son William Burts Linney: "He is a son of William Carlyle Linney and Mary Ann (Kelso) Linney. The father was a soldier in the Confederate army under Gen. Sterling Price, and fought at the battles of Wilson's Creek, Pea Ridge, Lexington, Cabin Creek and others. At Cabin Creek his regiment was captured, by the assistance of other troops, a Federal wagon train, taking valuable supplies." It is difficult to determine of which Confederate unit William C. Linney was a member. The Battle of Wilson's Creek [MO] involved the 3rd Texas Cavalry under the leadership of Elkanah Greer, but there is no roster listing for William Linney. The Battle of Cabin Creek [OK] merely states two confederate regiments and detachments from two other units under the command of native Cherokee Indian Stand Watie.

No conscription in the North during the CIVIL WAR was absolute. The drafted man could always hire a substitute if he could afford it. Starting in 1862, the U.S. government allowed this escape from military service on the theory that, so long as each name drawn from the wheel produced a man, it made no difference whether the drafted person or one hired to take his place appeared for muster.
